koi ponds and pergulas

I have been raising koi now for five years. All has gone well , except it seems every summer I'm fighting green water from alage blooms. In my system I run a 24 watt UV light that cuts down on the alage somewhat but its still a problem. My pond was located in mostly direct sun light with a sligt shade of a tree above. We decided to move to a different house and we were buliding our new koi pond. Their was no area for shade and the pond would be positioned in direct sunlight.so we decided to build a pergula over the top. It covers the pond completely with a lattuce roof. We choose all natural wood to protect the koi from any chemical run off. The pergula has been a God send! It keeps the water crystle clear and pervents alage blooms! Having a cover over the pond also protects the fish from the harmful rays of the hot sun. It also protects the fish from preditors flying over head looking for a meal! This pergula looks beautiful and only cost about 260.00 to build and is worth every penny! If I would have known earlier what a difference in water quality the structure makes I would have put a pergula up sooner!. Pergulas not only look beautiful they serve a real purpose! I highly recomend anyone who keeps koi to build a pergula over the pond. It will amaze you on the difference in water quality it makes! It cuts completely back on the alage blooms and helps keep the water crystle clear along with a running pumping system and uv of course. Now my fish are much happier and I get to enjoy a clear beautiful pond! Remember to only use natural wood when building your structure as runn off from treated wood can actually kill the koi due to the run off of treated wood! So if your tired of alage blooms in your koi pond I suggest a pergula. The structure will also enhance the beauty of your pond! I just love my structure and am very happy with the great job it does! So don't hesitate, look at some plans and start your structure today! It only takes about two days to build. A day for the cement to harden the posts and a day to build it. It is a perfect weekend project! Your koi will thank you for it! Also you can say goodbye to green water and alage!
